Time is an obsession of mine; or saving time, to be more precise.
I find it difficult to watch TV or play games (like Sims 4!) that I used to do all the time, by the way, without feeling guilty and thinking that I’m wasting time. I feel I could be spending my time more effectively and do something useful, make something or cook and clean. That’s exactly why I started blogging, so that I can document everything I was doing and have a sort of ‘hub’ for my ideas, sharing my projects so that others can do the same.
Recently, I started listening to a podcast called S-Town, which begins to document the doings of this clock maker who lives in a small town in Alabama, USA. Although the podcast began due to this clock maker revealing a murder that was covered up in his town, the story evolves and becomes so much more than that. Without ruining the story for you though, the reason I’m mentioning the podcast is because I was interested in his fascination with time. Being a clock maker, he was attuned to seeing the smallest of details in a clock’s mechanics but that skill was also very much reflected in his view of life and the world. He explored how humanity kept track of time before a clock was invented and therefore studied astrolabes which are said to tell not only time but ones place in the universe.
I also think it’s fascinating and think that it can really become an easy obsession to wonder about our place in the world as every second passes. I will leave you with a few of my favourite time quotes:
-Time is the longest distance between two places – Tennessee Williams
-Time moves slowly but passes quickly – Alice Walker
-Time is precious so waste it wisely – Unknown
