Decorating is a lot of fun but it can also be annoying and down-right dangerous.
Oak Furniture UK found that a quarter of us abandon our flat pack furniture before finishing it so they’ve invited me to share my own DIY disasters. There were times when I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry so I’m going to share with you my top 5 epic DIY fails…
Painting itself can be long and painstakingly tiring. It didn’t help therefore when my husband and I locked ourselves accidentally in the home office room because its door had no handle. The neighbours were out and there was nobody else at home. I froze from the shock of the door slamming shut and momentarily started cursing. A panic arose within me. 2 minutes felt like hours. Cheesy, I know, but it’s also very true. Luckily for me, my husband had brains enough to stick a screwdriver in the gaping hole in the door, where the handle should have been, and turn it to open the door. Goodness only know why the previous owners thought it’s best to take the handle with them…
As you can see we’ve now taped up the door handle mechanism so that it doesn’t happen again!
Painting the carpet, I mean walls
Accidents happen. Mostly these things happen when decorating and it’s disastrous (and excruciatingly annoying) when you get paint on the floor, or in my case – the carpet. There’s always that sinking feeling followed by lots of swearing. Yup, we still have splodges of paint drops on our carpet 🙁
I’ve been naughty, hoping nobody notices but I’ve spray painted my patio accidentally when I was colouring my wedding favours in teal or white. Although I had newspapers everywhere, I didn’t quite realise how far the spray can reach so I ended up with teal and white streaks. They’re still there now if you know where to look!
It’s a shame this sodden rain wasn’t able to wash it away still.
Stickers! Stickers everywhere
We moved into this house about a year and a half ago and I’m still finding stickers in built-in cupboards and wardrobes. Who lets their children run riot and stick princesses, footballers and Disney characters all over the kitchen cupboards and bedroom wardrobes? Anyway, I haven’t had the energy to get rid of them all so they still glare at me each time I peer inside.
A hole in the wall
I’m cheating a little with this one because an ex-colleague did this but it still haunts me. He ended up drilling a huge hole, two in fact, into his wall to the outside. He was trying to hang something up and ended up with two peep holes to the outdoors! I’m not lying when I say that it still shadows every hole in the wall that I do… Even recently, my husband was putting up a ginormous mirror (that you can see in my Easter decor post) and we decided against drilling extra holes and just used the one hole and nail that was made by the previous owners. It didn’t work out too badly actually 🙂
So, I’ve shared my DIY accidents (or stupidity.) Tell me your DIY disasters via the comments below.
