Bedroom Ideas and Redecorating the Purple

Right, I’ve had enough of…

…the purple walls
…the purple carpet
…the purple curtains
…the purple blind
…the purple lamp shade

ALL IN OUR BEDROOM because the previous owners clearly were obsessed with every violet shade available. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not horrible but it’s a bit much for me – someone who likes mostly neutrals. Anyway, it’s now been a year and a half since we moved in and I’ve decided to take care of it 😉

Luckily, Saga Equity Release got in touch to let me know that most equity release money is for home improvement and offered me a B&Q voucher to help the redecoration project. Follow my progress below and help me choose my bedroom colour scheme by voting 🙂

STAGE ONE: White Base Paint

white base painted bedroom redecorating stage one

I’ve painted our master bedroom single-handedly. I took two days off work, a Friday and a Monday and made an extended weekend specially to redecorate. I painted a couple of coats of white base paint and as you can see I finally managed to get rid of the deep violet walls. YAY!

It looks plain but I know that it’s not finished. In fact it’s only half way or even a quarter way through the redecoration process.

STAGE TWO: I Need to Paint the Colour

I’m off to Vienna this weekend for a few days with my mum to celebrate her 50th so once I’m back I’m going to paint my bedroom grey. It took a while for the paint smell to go away and was getting nose bleeds from smelling the paint and probably the white spirit. I’ll have to make sure to wear a mask next time. The paint is from Vaspar as I was really impressed with a sample I was given before. It’s a lovely light grey – very Scandinavian.

Unfortunately I can’t afford new carpets just yet and the purple curtains and blind will have to wait too so I still have purple in the bedroom but it’s not a single bit overwhelming as it used to be! Anyway, this brings me to stage three… I need to decide on the colours!

STAGE THREE: The Wall Design & Colour Scheme

One of our walls is large enough to hang something on there but I fancied doing something more quirky, especially as the nosy neighbours can see it easily. Our house is on a corner which means when someone comes up the road it’s easy to look up into our room.

I came across some awesome wall designs on Pinterest. As you can see on my board below I’m thinking of painting a cool pattern.

Follow Alina’s board FPP #Wall #Design on Pinterest.

At the moment I think I might go for a triangle or hexagon pattern with matching triangle or hexagon shelves. I might even do it DIY style…

Now, I also follow Design Seeds on Instagram and have been obsessing over the most beautiful colour schemes that are inspired by beautiful images. As I will be painting the walls light grey and I have to keep the splashes of purple for a bit longer, I decided to incorporate it into the colour scheme so I fell in love with two of her creations and I’m turning to you for help. Help me decide!

I have a poll below so make sure to vote. The option with the most votes I will use to for my bedroom home styling.

I voted “other”. I like whites and greys … A combination of both? x

Ooo, I do like the Scandi look but hoping to step out of my ‘comfort’ zone, especially coz I can’t afford to get rid of the purple carpet 🙁

My lounge is purple, pale blue and rose and I find it quite calming

Maybe something warmer? Blue based colours can be a bit cold feeling. Hell, what do I know? My wife’s the interior designer. I’m just the hired painter!

    • March 25, 2016

That’s interesting! Blue can be cold but I’m hoping the mixture of colours or shades would give the room a variety of emotions 🙂

I’ve voted other I think white and Grey’s would be fab. My sister has her room in that colour scheme and it looks amazing.

Awesome. I do like that nordic interior design style but wondering whether I can make a feature wall out of it…

    Tori Gabriel

I actually liked the purple but it’s my daughter’s favourite colour so I’m a bit biased. I like the green and purple as they are complimentary colours.

    • March 25, 2016

Thanks Tori. That’s fair enough, as I said it’s nice but after a year and a half it gets a bit overwhelming.

I liked the violet but I can see why it is off putting for a minimalist like you. Your doing a great job!

    • March 25, 2016

      Thanks Ana 🙂

I voted for the purple, pale blue and rose, I think those colours compliment each other really well and the rose gives the much needed warmth against the cooler shades.

    • March 25, 2016

It’s a winner at the moment so really do hope the mixture of colours gives it a nice finish 🙂

The white base alone is a huge transformation, it looks like you have so much more room x

    • March 25, 2016

It definitely opens up the place quite a lot!

  • March 25, 2016

A light grey compliments mauve X

    • March 25, 2016

Thanks Pam, I will find out for definitely once I paint the walls 😉

    Jess Powell (Babi a Fi)

I voted for the purple and green. The new wall colour makes such a difference, it looks so much more spacious. I love those recessed shelves too! x

    • March 26, 2016

Thanks Jess, they’re quite unique because they’re there for some ‘mood lighting’ in the bedroom. I don’t use it much but it’s useful coz I use it as a shelf actually 😉 hehe.

  • really good points. look forward to your next article
