How to Get to Sleep

With the wedding creeping up fast (less than 10 months now EEK!) I’m finding myself more and more excited and so I tend to find it harder to get to sleep. With a 9 to 5 job that’s a real pain, so I’ve decided to stick to the following things to help me get to sleep better…

how to sleep better going to bed and switching off

1. Stop Drinking Caffeine

I’m not going to drink coffee past 5pm, I’m cutting down the fizzy drinks and energy drinks too. Maybe I’ll make the energy drinks a weekend thing only?

2. Try Relaxing Teas

I’ll trade the coffee for Chamomile tea as I was told it’s calming because it increases glycine, which relaxes muscles and nerves. I was also told to try out passion fruit tea as it has some sort of chemical that help make you tired but I’ve not tried this out.

3. Relax Before Bedtime

I will now consciously take time to have ‘down time’ before I go to bed, maybe have a bath and stay away from technology too as games and reading texts or emails can make you anxious or ‘worked up’ and hence you’re more awake.

4. Don’t Exercise at Night

This one is a tough one for me and not sure I’ll be able to stick to it. After work once or twice a week I like to use the treadmill. It’s a known fact that doing sports will make you more energetic and make your brain more active so that it’s harder to shut down and go to sleep. However, I think I tire myself out so much the exercise actually helps me, so I’m not sure I’ll stick to this one haha!

5. Get a Bigger Bed

My other half loves to take up most of the space when he sleeps so I’m sneakily thinking about trading our double bed for a king size bed and mattress! We’ve already got a king sized duvet as I hate a draft so should be an easy transition right?

6. See the GP

If these things still don’t help I might just have to see the GP… or wait until the Wedding Day has been and gone 😉

What do you do to sleep better?
